Rachel Emily Nichols was born in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Alison and James Nichols, a schoolteacher. She has English, French Canadian, German, Irish, Italian and Scottish roots. Cony High School, Augusta is where she earned a high jump medal. She was a student at Columbia University in New York City in which she earned a degree with a double major in economics and math. She began modeling and launched a successful modeling career, being employed by prominent companies like Guess?, Abercrombie & Fitch or L'Oreal. Rachel was able to transition into acting after being offered a part on the HBO comedy Sex and the City (1998).
